As the song ends, the BOY comes running forward excitedly.
BOY: It’s Christmas, It’s Christmas! Mother, do you see all the presents?
MOTHER: I do, son. I do. There’s quite a pile.
A. ROSEMARY: Your Aunt Ginger and Uncle Murray seem to have added to the pile. It’s higher than it was before.
UNCLE MURRAY: Guilty as charged.
AUNT GINGER: How could we resist?
BOY: Oh, Mother. Look at the rabbit. Is it for me?
MOTHER: Silly boy, of course it is.
UN. MURRAY: I’ll wager most of these packages are for you.
The boy hugs the rabbit and begins opening the next present, a shiny new race car. The rabbit slips from his arm as he zooms the race car across the floor.
A. GINGER: That one’s from us. Open that one next!
UN. MURRAY: You’ll like that one! Fastest model made, my young man. I saw it in action at the race track. Blazing speed.
A. GINGER: (Scolding) Murray, don’t start talking to the boy about the race track.
BOY: (Looking all around) But where’s my rabbit?
MOTHER: (Finding it and giving it to him) Here it is. My it’s soft.
The boy gives the bunny another hug and then is distracted by the offer of yet another present from Aunt Rosemary.
A. ROSEMARY: Don’t forget this one.
BOY: (Opening the present) A Spinning Top! Make it spin, Auntie Rose, make it spin!
A. ROSEMARY: Here goes. (She spins the top)
BOY: (Holding the rabbit so she can see) Do you see that, Rabbit? Look at it go.
The family continues to enjoy the holiday, with the Boy occasionally picking up the stuffed velveteen rabbit and giving it a quick hug.
MARGERY: For at least two hours that night, the Boy loved the Velveteen Rabbit.
MERCER: But in the hustle and bustle of the holiday,
MARGARET: In the great rustling of tissue paper and unwrapping of parcels,
MARGERY: And in the excitement of looking at all the new presents
NARRATORS: The velveteen rabbit was quite forgotten.
During the narration the other presents are unwrapped and exclaimed over, with the Uncles and Aunts, and Mother smiling and enjoying the boy’s excitement. Nana enters, surveying the scattered boxes, toys, ribbons and paper.
NANA: Cook’s asked me to call you to dinner, Ma’am. She says her goose iscooked and coming to the table. Right Now.
MOTHER: Dinner! Oh, mustn’t keep Cook waiting. Thank you, Nana.
A. GINGER: Goose! I love goose. Oh, Christmas is my favorite time of the year.
BOY: Mine, too!
UN. MURRAY: I call the drumstick.
BOY: I want a drumstick!
MOTHER: Then it’s a good thing our goose has two.
UN. MURRAY: I’ll race you to the table!
A. GINGER: (Gently scolding) Really, Murray. You and your racing!
The family exits to the Dining Room, leaving Nana with the mess to clean up. The narrators step in as additional family servants to aid Nana in the clean up, and to wheel in the Toy Cupboard.
NANA: Can you believe the mess a single, solitary boy can make? Not to mention his indulgent aunts and uncles. Ah,
well. That’s why they have me! (To the toys scattered about) Time for all you new playthings to learn your place.
(Directing the Narrators as if they were house staff) Boxes and paper and ribbon for the trash bin. Stuffed rabbit,
race car and spinning top to the Toy Cupboard.
